A simple 1‑day game plan
- Early start → Samet Nangshe Viewpoint
- 60–90 minutes from Phuket. Park at the base and take the pickup shuttle to the top; small fees apply. Sunrise is spectacular if you’re up for it.
- Late morning → Longtail boat into the bay
- Good mainland piers: Samchong Pier or Khlong Khien (near the Ao Phang‑Nga National Park HQ). Park in the official lot, then hire a longtail (shared or private).
- Classic stops: James Bond Island (Khao Phing Kan), Koh Panyee (floating village lunch), sea caves and lagoons around Koh Hong.
- Afternoon options on the drive back
- Wat Suwan Khuha (Monkey Cave) temple or a quick stop in Phang Nga town for snacks and views.
Timing: Expect 2–3 hours on the water, plus driving and viewpoint time. Start early and you’ll be back on Phuket by sunset.
Fees, parking, and boats
- National park fees apply for Ao Phang‑Nga; bring cash and your passport.
- Piers charge for parking and boat hire—check that your boat has life jackets.
- Don’t leave valuables in the car; use paid lots with attendants and keep your receipt.
Driving notes
- Roads are paved and well‑signed; no tolls. Watch for speed cameras and sudden 50 km/h zones near towns.
- In rain, hills and painted lines get slick—brake gently and use lower gears on descents.
- Fuel and rest stops are plentiful along Route 402/4 (large PTT, Bangchak, PT stations).
Navigation and safety tips
- Use Google Maps/Waze with live traffic; download offline maps as backup.
- Tide matters for sea caves—mornings are often calmer; ask at the pier.
- Carry your national license + a 1949 IDP, rental agreement, and emergency numbers (191 Police, 1669 Ambulance, 1155 Tourist Police).
- Most rental contracts don’t allow ferries; park at the pier and go by boat.
