Patong Hill (between Patong and Kathu) is Phuket’s classic bottleneck—steep, narrow, and busy at rush hours (08:00–10:00 and 16:30–19:30), in rain, and after accidents. You can dodge the worst of it with smart timing and a couple of reliable detours.
Two proven alternatives
- Northern coastal route (scenic, good for airport/northbound trips)
- Patong → Kalim → Kamala → Surin → Bang Tao → Cherng Talay → Thepkasattri Rd.
- When it helps: Heading to/from the airport, Bang Tao/Laguna, Surin, or Phuket Town via the Bypass. It adds distance but often beats standstill on Patong Hill at peak times.
- Notes: Curvy coastal hills; start early to avoid Kamala’s afternoon crawl.
- Southern loop via Chalong (steady flow, good for Town/Karon/Kata)
- Patong → Karon → Kata → Chalong Circle → Chao Fah East/West → Bypass Rd (or Kathu/Phuket Town).
- When it helps: Moving between Patong and central/south Phuket without climbing Patong Hill.
- Notes: Longer but consistent; avoid unpaved “shortcuts” around Kata/Big Buddha.
If you must take Patong Hill
- Best windows: Before 09:00 or after 19:30. Midday is usually easier than late afternoon.
- Inside Patong, skip Beach Road: Use Phang Muang Sai Kor (the back road) to reach the hill faster.
- Drive the grade smartly: Leave space for bikes, brake in a straight line, and use a lower gear on descents—especially in rain.
Live navigation and safety
- Use Google Maps/Waze with live traffic; compare ETA for “coast via Kamala” vs “south via Chalong” before you commit.
- In downpours, wait 15–30 minutes—cells pass quickly and the hill gets slick.
- No toll roads on Phuket. Keep small cash for parking, not for road fees.
- Documents: national license + 1949 IDP, rental agreement, emergency numbers (191 Police, 1669 Ambulance, 1155 Tourist Police).
Pro tip: If you’re airport‑bound at rush hour, the northern coastal route often wins; if you’re Town‑bound, the Chalong loop is the safer bet.
