Phuket International Airport (HKT) sits on the island’s north. From here, one main spine road (Thepkasattri Rd) and a handful of coastal lanes take you to the beaches. Choose between the faster inland “Bypass” option or scenic coast drives—then time your trip to dodge traffic.
Quick routing guide by resort
- Bang Tao / Laguna / Cherng Talay
- Fastest: Airport → Thepkasattri Rd → Ban Don–Cherng Talay Rd (toward Laguna/Boat Avenue). Smooth, little climbing.
- Scenic detour: Nai Yang → Nai Thon → Layan coastal road; slower, gorgeous curves.
- Surin / Kamala
- Airport → Cherng Talay → coastal road through Surin into Kamala. Great views, moderate hills.
- Patong
- Option A (coastal): Airport → Cherng Talay → Kamala → Patong. Most scenic; can clog late afternoon.
- Option B (inland/Bypass): Airport → Thepkasattri Rd → Bypass Rd → Kathu → over Patong Hill. Fewer views, often quicker at peak times.
- Karon / Kata
- Via Patong: Patong Hill → Beach Road south to Karon/Kata. Best outside rush hours.
- Via Chalong (hill‑avoider): Airport → Bypass Rd → Chao Fah East/West → Chalong Circle → Patak Rd to Karon/Kata. Longer distance, steadier flow.
- Rawai / Nai Harn
- Airport → Bypass Rd → Chao Fah East → Chalong Circle → Wiset Rd to Rawai; continue to Nai Harn. Flat, straightforward.
- Phuket Town (Old Town)
- Airport → Thepkasattri Rd → Bypass Rd → town center. Park at malls (Central/Limelight) or marked lots.

- Bang Tao/Surin: 25–40 min
- Kamala: 40–55 min
- Patong: 50–75 min
- Karon/Kata: 70–95 min
- Rawai/Nai Harn: 80–100 min

Note: Add time at 08:00–10:00 and 16:30–19:00, and when crossing Patong Hill.
When to drive and what to expect
- Start early for beach arrivals and again before sunset. Patong/Kamala hills back up late afternoon.
- No toll roads on Phuket; bridges to the mainland are free.
- Gas: Large PTT/Bangchak/PT stations sit along Thepkasattri and the Bypass—easy for a first fill.
- Safety: Drive on the left; watch for motorbikes filtering on both sides; use engine braking on descents.
- Navigation: Use Google Maps with live traffic; avoid “unsealed” shortcuts. Keep your parking receipts.
