E20, Gasohol 95 or Diesel in Thailand: what to fill and how not to get it wrong

Thai pumps look familiar, but labels can be confusing if you’re new to “Gasohol” and ethanol blends. A 2‑minute check before you refuel will save you money—and protect your engine and insurance.

What the labels mean

  • Gasohol 95 (E10): Unleaded petrol with up to 10% ethanol, RON 95. Safe for most modern petrol cars.
  • Gasohol 91 (E10): Similar but lower octane (RON 91). Some cars allow it; others specify 95 only.
  • E20: Petrol with 20% ethanol. Cheaper, but only for vehicles approved for E20.
  • E85: High‑ethanol fuel. Do not use unless the car is specifically labeled “E85/FFV.”
  • Diesel: Look for “Diesel,” “B7,” or “Hi‑Diesel.” Use exactly what’s specified on the fuel cap.

Which fuel do rentals usually take?

  • Most compact Thai rentals (e.g., Toyota Yaris/Vios, Honda City, Mazda 2) are compatible with Gasohol 95; many are also E20‑approved.
  • Some older models may be Gasohol 95 only.
  • Diesel is for specific models only (usually larger SUVs/pickups). Never put petrol into a diesel—misfuelling is a costly, uninsured mistake.

Always follow the car’s fuel cap and your rental agreement. If the cap says “E20 OK,” you can choose E20 (cheaper) or Gasohol 95. If it says “Gasohol 95 only,” don’t use E20. If it says “Diesel,” use Diesel/B7.

How to avoid misfuelling (simple checklist)

  1. Read the fuel cap/sticker and your contract before your first fill. Snap a photo.
  2. At the pump, point to the cap label and say: “This one, full, please.”
If you want to be extra clear: “Gasohol 95, full” or “E20, full” or “Diesel, full.”
  3. Let the attendant pump for you (standard in Thailand). Watch the grade selected on the screen.
  4. Keep the receipt and note the station—handy for full‑to‑full returns and any disputes.

Optional Thai phrases (if you like):

  • “Gasohol 95, tem-tang kráp/khâ” = Gasohol 95, full tank please.
  • “E20, tem-tang kráp/khâ” = E20, full tank please.
  • “Diesel, tem-tang kráp/khâ” = Diesel, full tank please.

Diesel specifics

  • You’ll see B7 and sometimes “Hi‑Diesel.” When in doubt, B7 is the broadly compatible choice—but always match the cap.
  • Don’t mix diesel and petrol. If you misfuel, do not start the engine—call the rental company immediately for assistance.

Money‑saving tips (without risk)

  • If your car is E20‑approved, E20 is usually a few baht per liter cheaper than Gasohol 95.
  • Skip premium fuels unless required; standard grades are fine for rentals.
  • Pay in THB (decline “pay in your home currency” at the terminal) and keep the slip.
