Phuket connects to Thailand’s mainland by bridge, so road trips to Phang Nga, Khao Lak, Krabi, and beyond are easy. Reaching nearby islands by car, however, is a different story: most are boat‑only and many rental contracts forbid ferries.
What you can do by car
- Drive off‑island via Sarasin Bridge (no toll) to:
- Phang Nga Bay viewpoints, Samet Nangshe, and Natai Beach
- Khao Lak (Similan tour departures at Thap Lamu Pier)
- Krabi, Ao Nang, Railay (park and take a boat for beach access)
- Park‑and‑boat day trips:
- Phi Phi: ferries from Rassada Pier (paid parking nearby)
- Koh Racha/Coral Island: speedboats/longtails from Chalong Pier
- Koh Yao Yai/Noi: speedboats/longtails from Bang Rong or Ao Po Piers
Tip: Use paid lots (about 50–200 THB/day), remove valuables, keep the ticket/receipt.
What you usually can’t (or shouldn’t) do
- Take a Phuket rental car on a ferry. Most contracts prohibit ferries; insurance often excludes damage during loading, at sea, or off paved roads.
- Drive on car‑free islands (Phi Phi, Racha, Coral, Similan) — they simply don’t allow private cars.
- “Rare exceptions”: Limited local vehicle ferries exist from the Phang Nga/Krabi side to islands like Koh Yao Yai/Noi or Koh Lanta, but rental cars are rarely permitted and coverage may be void. If you must, get written approval from the rental and insurer first.
Smart alternatives
- Leave the car at the pier and rent scooters/golf carts or use songthaews on the island.
- If you need a car on another island (e.g., Lanta), consider renting locally there instead of shipping a Phuket vehicle.
Before you go
- Check your rental agreement for “geography” and “ferry” clauses; get written permission for any cross‑province plans.
- Save pier parking contacts/receipts; take arrival photos of your car.
- Carry your national license + 1949 IDP, rental agreement, and emergency numbers.
