Good news for drivers: Phuket is easy on the wallet when it comes to roads. Most routes are free to use, and the island is connected to the mainland by bridges—no toll booths involved.
Reality at a glance
- No toll roads on Phuket Island.
- The bridges to the mainland (Sarasin and Thepkrasattri) are free for cars and motorbikes. You may pass a checkpoint, but there’s no fee.
- Underpasses and bypass roads around Phuket Town, Chalong, and Samkong are also free.
Myths, decoded
- “You pay to enter Phuket by car” — False. There’s no entry toll.
- “You need an RFID toll pass (Easy Pass/M‑Pass) to drive on the island” — False. Those are for Bangkok-area expressways.
- “Patong tunnel toll” — Not a thing (as of now). If a future project opens with tolls, it will be clearly signposted.
Where you might actually pay
- National park areas (e.g., around Nai Yang/Mai Khao): entrance fees apply to the park, not the road.
- Private piers/marinas and some beach parking lots: expect a parking or access fee.
- Island ferries: Most rentals don’t allow taking cars on ferries; if permitted, vehicle fares are charged by the ferry operator.
Day trips off-island
- Drives to Phang Nga, Krabi, and Khao Lak: generally toll-free.
- Heading toward Bangkok? Expect toll expressways there—cash/QR/RFID options exist, but not needed for Phuket-only trips.
Practical tips
- Keep small cash for parking; ask for a receipt.
- Don’t stop on bridges except in emergencies.
- Watch for speed cameras near U-turn bays and major junctions.
- Carry your national license + 1949 IDP, passport (or a copy), and your rental agreement.
