Accidents are stressful, but staying calm and following the right steps will protect your safety, your rights, and your insurance coverage.
Step‑by‑step
- Check safety
- Stop, switch on hazard lights, place a warning triangle if you have one.
- Check for injuries. Call 1669 (ambulance) if anyone is hurt.
- Don’t move the cars (unless unsafe)
- If the scene is dangerous or blocking traffic, take wide photos first, mark tire positions if possible, then move to a safe spot.
- Call your rental company
- Use the hotline on your rental agreement so they can dispatch insurance assistance and guide you. If you’re with SunnyCars: +66 95‑293‑0697 (WhatsApp/Telegram/call).
- Call the insurer/accident hotline
- Most Thai policies send a surveyor/assessor to the scene. Ask for a claim number and wait for instructions.
- Call the police when needed
- If there are injuries, disputes, significant damage, or a foreign driver is involved, dial 191 (police). Tourist Police 1155 can help with English. Do not leave before you’re told to.
- Exchange details (no passports)
- Full names, phone numbers, license plates, driver’s license numbers, insurer and policy numbers. Never hand over your passport; a photo copy is enough.
- Document everything
- Photos/videos: overall scene, all vehicles and plates, close‑ups of damage, road signs, lane markings, skid marks, weather, and any CCTV location. Note time and location.
- Don’t admit fault or pay cash on the spot
- Be polite and cooperative, but let insurers and police determine responsibility.
- Get paperwork before you go
- Police report number, insurer claim number, tow receipt (if any). Inform the rental again once you leave the scene.
- Aftercare
- Follow the insurer’s instructions for repair/assessment. If the car is undriveable, arrange a replacement with your rental company.
Important reminders
- License/IDP: Have your national license plus a 1949 IDP; lacking proper licensing can affect insurance.
- Alcohol/drugs: DUI voids coverage and carries severe penalties.
- Floods: Avoid deep water; hydrolock is commonly excluded from coverage.
