Do you need an International Driving Permit to rent a car in Phuket?

Many rental desks in Phuket will hand you the keys with just your home driving license. However, to drive legally and keep insurance fully valid in Thailand, you should carry an International Driving Permit (IDP) together with your national license.

Law vs. rental counter

  • Thailand recognizes the 1949 IDP (Geneva Convention). Bring the booklet plus your original license.
  • ASEAN licenses are generally accepted without an IDP.
  • Some officers may accept an English‑language license, but this isn’t guaranteed—and insurers may reject claims if you don’t hold the proper permit.
  • If your country issues only the 1968 IDP, check whether a 1949 version is available. If not, carry a certified translation and understand acceptance can vary.

Police checks and insurance reality

  • Roadside checks happen, especially around Patong, Karon, and major junctions.
  • No IDP (or no correct category) can mean fines and potential insurance complications after an accident.
  • Insurers typically require you to be “properly licensed” for Thailand; without an IDP or Thai license, claims risk being denied.

Motorbikes matter

  • To ride a scooter legally, you need a motorcycle endorsement on your license. A car‑only license is not sufficient and can void coverage.

What to carry when driving

  • Passport (or a copy), national license, IDP, rental agreement, and emergency contacts.
  • Keep physical documents handy; the IDP is a paper booklet and not digital.
  • Check the IDP expiry (often 1 year) and keep it together with your home license.

If you don’t have an IDP

  • Consider taxis or delivery services for short stays.
  • For longer stays, you can apply for a Thai driver’s license via the Department of Land Transport.
  • At minimum, carry a certified translation of your license and confirm terms with your insurer and rental company.
