Both work in Phuket—but they’re not equal. For most visitors, a small car is safer and often better value over a full trip. A scooter can be fine for short hops if you’re licensed and confident.
Safety
- Car: Seat belts, airbags, A/C, and protection in rain and on hills. Far lower injury risk in a crash.
- Scooter: Highest risk on Patong/Karon/Kamala hills, in rain, at night, and with sand/gravel. Two up with luggage is unstable.
- Season factor: In rainy months (May–Nov), a car is strongly safer.
Legality and insurance
- Car: Your national license + 1949 IDP keeps you legal and protects insurance.
- Scooter: You need a motorcycle endorsement (and an IDP). A car‑only license on a scooter can void coverage and lead to fines.
Costs (realistic picture)
- Daily rates: Scooters from ~200–500 THB/day; small cars from ~550–850 THB/day.
- Hidden costs:
- Scooter: gear/ponchos, higher medical risk, limited insurance, night/rain taxi backups.
- Car: bigger fuel bill and parking fees—but you avoid multiple taxis and stay mobile in bad weather.
- For couples/families or anyone doing day trips, a car usually wins on total value.
Convenience
- Car: Luggage space, child seats, phone charging, privacy, and dry rides in storms. Easy for supermarkets, malls, and beach‑hopping.
- Scooter: Easier to park near busy beaches and nightlife; nimble in traffic—but exposure to sun/rain is real.
Who should choose what?
- Choose a car if you’re with kids, carrying luggage, planning long drives (Phang Nga, Khao Sok), or visiting in monsoon.
- Choose a scooter only if you have the proper license, ride experience, and plan short daytime hops in good weather.
Tip: If you do rent a scooter, wear a proper helmet, avoid night/rain, and never ride after drinking.
