From May to November, Phuket sees short, intense squalls and slick roads—especially on hills like Patong–Kathu and Karon–Kata. With a few habits, you can stay safe and avoid costly mistakes.
Before you set off
- Check the radar/forecast; intense cells often pass in 15–30 minutes—waiting can be safest.
- Tires, wipers, lights: make sure tread is good, wipers streak‑free, and all lights work.
- Plan routes with gentler grades if you’re new to left‑side driving; avoid mountain passes during peak storms when possible.
In heavy rain
- Lights: Use low beams; avoid hazards while moving (they’re for stopped vehicles). Fog lights only if visibility is poor.
- Slow and smooth: Keep 4–6 seconds’ following distance; avoid sudden steering/braking. Turn off cruise control to maintain traction.
- Surface hazards: Painted lines, metal plates, and zebra crossings are slippery; puddles can hide potholes—straddle standing water when safe.
- If you hydroplane: Ease off the throttle, keep the wheel straight, don’t brake hard; let the tires regain grip.
Slippery hills and descents
- Engine braking: Select a lower gear (S/B/L or manual mode) before a descent; brake lightly and progressively.
- Cornering: Do most of your braking in a straight line before the bend; keep inputs gentle.
- Space for bikes: Motorbikes filter on both sides—check mirrors before turning or changing lanes.
- No risky passes: Avoid overtaking on hills in rain; spray reduces visibility.
Flooding and water crossings
- When in doubt, don’t enter. Avoid water above mid‑wheel depth or flowing water.
- If you must pass a shallow stretch, proceed very slowly and steadily; after, brake gently a few times to dry the discs.
- Hydrolock and water damage are commonly excluded by insurance—turn back rather than gamble.
Visibility and safe stops
- If rain becomes blinding, pull into a service station or well‑lit parking area; use hazards only when stopped.
- Don’t stop on blind crests or narrow shoulders, especially on hills.
Quick wet‑weather checklist
- Defog: Use A/C and front/rear demisters; crack a window slightly if needed.
- Keep distance from trucks—spray can create a whiteout.
- Carry your documents: national license + 1949 IDP, rental agreement, emergency numbers (191 Police, 1669 Ambulance, 1155 Tourist Police).
